After iGEM Committees

After iGEM Committees are specialized teams of iGEMers who are passionate about the values of the iGEM and possess skills to be a part of dedicated After iGEM projects. Members contribute towards the development and implementation of committee goals, along with exploring other avenues the committee can contribute to.

Academia & Research Committee

The Academia & Research Committee aims to bring all iGEM alumni pursuing their Research career in Synthetic Biology in a one-stop central hub, a platform where researchers can share their research work, publications and opportunities with fellow iGEMers. Our mission is to foster exchange of cognitive ideas, collaborations and opportunities, mainly between the iGEM alumni, Synthetic Biology researchers and budding iGEMers on both local and global levels. We also strive to bridge the gap between Synthetic Biology academic associations and research communities, and the contemporary iGEM community. Furthermore, the Committee endeavours to connect SynBio stakeholders to nurture and expedite the research efforts and projects undertaken by iGEM teams, so that the projects developed can transition as authentic solutions for topical world-wide problems.

Education Committee

We examine the impact of iGEM on education outside of the iGEM realm, including educational resources, school/collegiate curriculums, workshops/bootcamps and online knowledge bases. We facilitate connections between international iGEM/Synbio educators and we are building a hub for them to share knowledge and seek collaborations. Our mentorship program helps iGEM alumni remain active participants in the iGEM/After iGEM community.

Committee Projects:

  • After iGEM Mentorship Program (guidelines): Recruit iGEM alumni to maintain contact with iGEM and guide less experienced teams towards better iGEM experiences.
  • Mentor connection: Build communication channels between synbio educators/mentors, including those who do not fall under the iGEM umbrella, enabling collaborative learning and sharing of educational knowledge/resources throughout the synbio community.
  • Synbio Education Global Map: Use information gathered through committee research and communications/surveys from our network to assemble a knowledge base that encompasses the diversity of synbio educational approaches used internationally.

High School Committee

Formed by members from diverse backgrounds, the After iGEM High School committee aims to connect with High School iGEM alumni and listen to their iGEM experiences. The stories and testimonials collected via the alumni interaction can potentially show how iGEM experience is linked with diverse pathway cases of high schoolers. The information will also be shared for discussion with other relevant stakeholders in a broader community, from the high school instructors to the organizations providing educational services. Also, along with getting more alumni involved, we want to build a channel for them to share their expertise, resources and experience with the current HS teams All the insights we get from the above efforts will be provided with data-driven evidence.

Industry Committee

In five years, the Industry committee aims to build a consolidated, renowned and self-growing network of iGEM alumni, with an information flow that increases steadily. The Committee will add significant value to the life of iGEMers after the competition by developing projects that support continuous personal and professional growth. We would like this to be reflected in a high number of job positions and internships assigned to iGEM alumni all over the world. Our aspiration is the network to be perceived as a hub of valuable human talent for industries and, reciprocally, unique job opportunities for iGEM alumni. With lucid description of the feasibility of iGEM Projects translating into industries, we envision to provide recommendations for the benefit of the iGEM Community.

Committee Projects:

Industry committee has two main working areas, which correspond to Effective Communication and Active Collaboration, both oriented to benefit iGEM alumni and enhance their relationship with industry. Within them, we have identified three action axes that represent the projects in which the committee will work on. These correspond to:

  • Building an Industry Alumni Network to facilitate the communication and collaboration between iGEM alumni in industries and the incorporation of new alumni in the sector.
  • Mapping Industrial Regional Needs and providing advice on how junior iGEM alumni can join the industry sector.
  • Developing a platform to help iGEMers to deal with Intellectual Property, specifically with technology transfer, while balancing the open science principle of iGEM competition.

Policy Committee

The overarching goal of the policy committee is to develop a dialogue between synthetic biology researchers in the iGEM community and policymakers and also act as a platform for those conversations. The committee can be a resourceful contact point for teams translating their human practices work into policy solutions that tackles real-world problems. We wish to promote valorization of science by assisting iGEM teams in taking part in public hearings, policy discussions, and in the institutional level policymaking in their regions, if possible. We also encourage the participation of iGEM Alumni in policy-related conferences, workshops and research by providing them with appropriate resources to explore their interests. Our long term mission involves establishing a permanent advisory team to help iGEM teams with regulations and their policy solutions. This year, we look forward to hosting webinars, online workshops, regional meetups for experts in policy making and novice enthusiasts to have open discussions.
